ART AND HUMAN RIGHTS FESTIVAL 2023
20 – 24 June 2023, Belgrade
The third edition of the festival is inspired by Martin Niemöller's poem “First they came” with the aim of connecting artists and human rights defenders with each other and with the wider community to encourage and empower citizens to react against injustice, to take an active role in changes in their communities. The theme of the festival "Standing up for another is a fight for ourselves" calls for more empathy and compassion in the time we live in, putting humanity first before personal (selfish) needs. The festival includes artists and activists from Argentina, Armenia, Australia, Brazil, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Kosovo, Norway, Italy, Serbia and the USA.
PERFORMANCE
Antagon Theater from Germany presents Barbara Lus Carvalho [Brazil] in the play "Corpus Mundi" which deals with the process of decolonizing one's own body and mind, as well as the play “Camara”, which explores the concept of a new approach to "masculinity." Reflector Theater [Serbia] is performing "Devojčice" (Girls), a documentary play about growing up as a woman in Serbia today, and DAH Theatre "The Trees are Dancing", about the importance of preserving trees.
WORKSHOPS
"Afro-diasporic body" - a workshop that will deal with the colonization of the body, especially in dance, by Barbara Lucy Carvalho [Brazil/Germany]. "Work on a solo performance" - from autobiographical material to a universal story, led by Karolina Spaic [Serbia/Netherlands] "Intersection: theater techniques and human rights" - The workshop is led by Jadranka Andjelic [Serbia].
INSTALLATIONS, PERFORMANCES
Performance "Curtain Theory" by Ivana Milenović Popović about empathy and missing babies in Serbia, performance Solvitur Ambundo – a walk through the forest by Greenland Friteater [Norway], with a focus on trees and climate justice; Performance "I love you" by Snezana Golubović [Serbia/Germany] and performance and interactive installation "15 minutes in the aquarium", by Alisa Oravec [Serbia] on the topic of "fast fashion" and ocean pollution.
READING
"Art Against Brutality" by Claudia Bernardi [Argentina], the initiator of the Perquin School of Art – Walls of Hope which deals with art created by victims of state terror, armed conflicts and forced exile. Through the creation of joint murals, public art projects, urban interventions, the focus of the project is to give a voice to participants who survived political violence, those who have been forgotten or deliberately silenced.
CONCERT
Performs Marcelo – Marko Šelić [Serbia], a writer and musician who has released 6 studio albums and 6 books, including 4 novels. He is a regular columnist for the daily newspaper Danas and co-author of the regional television show Perspektiva, which deals with young people.
WALLS OF HOPE
It is an international project of art and human rights, conflict resolution and preservation of memory led by a visual artist Claudia Bernardi [Argentina]. The result of painting on the Silos wall is a mural by a participant from Serbia that will remain permanently in the public space of Belgrade.
“OVER THE LINE” PROGRAM
Examples of feminist practice of connecting, peaceful conflict resolution and cooperation of those who, according to the official narrative, belong to opposing groups. Participants: Zana Hoxha [Kosovo]; Ana Miljanić, Ivana Milenović Popović, Dijana Milošević, Staša Zajović [Serbia].
FILMS, PHOTOGRAPHS
"The Land Where Trees Fly" by David Barletti and Jacopo Quadri, shows the power of art in the work of ODIN Theater with the community. It is followed by an online conversation with Eugenio Barba and Julia Varley. Documentary film directed by Maja Mitić, "Everything on a Woman's Back" [production NOVA MREŽA] deals with issues of gender equality and sexism in everyday life and the media, through a conversation with actress Mirjana Karanović. "Kings&Queens" is the title of the photo exhibition by Leon Hendriks and Miche Schneiderberg [Netherlands].
FORUM
The theme "Standing up for another is a fight for ourselves" recognizes the necessity of solidarity in all times, and especially those of great changes, when society easily forgets or even actively oppresses its weakest members. Participants: Gedi Aniksdal [Norway]; Branislava Jovanović Izabela Kisić, Jelena Krstić, Maja Mitić [Serbia]; Olivera Simić [Bosnia and Herzegovina/Australia]; Karolina Spaić [Serbia/Netherlands].
