THEATER AS A WAY OF HEALING

23. – May 27, 2003

The festival and conference “Theater as a Way of Healing” brought together an international group of artists and theorists who, in their work, address issues of healing and transformation of difficult experiences using theatrical techniques.

These issues are extremely important for our country in this period, but also internationally, considering contemporary world history. The most important questions in focus of this festival/conference are: what is the role and power of theater and art in exploring content related to healing and reconciliation? What is the power of art in confronting crimes committed in our name? What are the ways of healing the “wounds” inflicted during the past period in our region? What are the experiences
of people and artists from other countries?

Rituals and shamanistic practice are the origins of theater. Knowledge of the cosmos, stars, medicinal herbs, and healing ceremonies preceded modern medicine. Art, including theater as we know it today, has separated from everyday life , as has modern medicine. Our world is characterized by the separation of functions of different fields of knowledge and art, but also by the desire to somehow reconnect or intertwine them. Contemporary theater is increasingly taking on the role of spiritual disciplines , and its healing power is becoming increasingly evident. In a way, we are returning to the beginnings. – Jadranka Anđelić
