IN/VISIBLE CITY 2007 / 2008
Niš, Leskovac, Vranje, Subotica, Inđija
The main goal of the Un/Visible City project was to make the multiethnic structure of cities in Serbia and the richness of different ethnic cultures more visible. To rediscover what exists and has been a part of our culture for centuries but has become hidden.
After the success of the pilot project, in 2007/08, DAH Teatar expanded the project to Serbia (Novi Sad, Subotica, Inđija, Niš, Leskovac, Vranje). The texts of the plays were created based on research into history, documentary materials and testimonies, demographic and social structure of the cities in which the project took place, conducted by the creative team of In/Visible City.
Through performances in city transport buses, which “told” the multiethnic history of cities, through cultural exchange and debates on interethnic tolerance, through the calendar for 2008, in which each month is inspired by the culture of one ethnic community, through a documentary film about the project and the travels of the DAH Teatar Center for Theater Research throughout Serbia, we wanted to contribute to the normalization of relations between different ethnic communities living in Serbia. To contribute to the development of a civil society based on tolerance.
Through these activities, we remind that our culture, history, state, and everyday life are interwoven with the influences of different cultures and that the cities in which we live today were created by the work and creativity of citizens who lived there before us, of different
ethnicities.
