DOCUMENTS OF TIME
The performance, created for the specific space of a staircase, originated in Belgrade during May-June 1999, during the NATO bombing of our country. It is a testimony to the reality that is melting before us. The impossibility
of capturing a moment in time, the need for another kind of record and witness. [1999]
“When NATO began bombing my country in the spring of 1999, the last year of this century, suddenly everything we knew as human beings and artists was called into question. I suddenly realized that I no longer understood anything about this century, politics, history. My mind was blank when faced with the strange logic of modern politicians—killing more to prevent killing. My colleagues from the theater shared my opinion. We realized that we needed the wisdom of some time, very old, who can look down on the dark times in which we live. So we chose to speak in our play through two very old ladies who came out of old museums, archives full of dust, using the collective memory of humanity that is recorded in books.” – Dijana Milošević
“If this century has taught us anything, it is that culture is NOT a defense against barbarism. Not because creative people are completely helpless against guns and concentration camps or because a cultural person is at the mercy of an ignorant killer. Something even worse happens, which is that the cultural person and the ignorant killer were very often one and the same.” – Fintan O’Tool
