PASSING ON THE FLAME

11 – 18. June 2011

Festival and conference celebrating 20 years of DAH Teatar

DAH Teatar is the only professional theater company in our country that has lasted for 20 years. Out of the need to expand its activities and operate both nationally and internationally, it founded the Center for Theater Research, which during its two decades of existence
has realized a large number of projects, performances, guest appearances, festivals, and workshops. DAH Teatar performs all over the world, and also presents the most important artists and theorists in the field of performing arts. Due to political
circumstances in our country, DAH Teatar was not supported by official institutions until 2000, but with the changes in 2000, the activities of DAH Teatar began to be supported by the City Secretariat for Culture of the City of Belgrade and the Ministry
of Culture of the Republic of Serbia, which was and still is an additional stimulus to our work.

In our culture, where the biggest problem is continuity and duration, we believe that it is of exceptional importance to show that a certain cultural concept, i.e., an artistic organization, can last and inspire new generations with its work.

“Passing on the Flame” carries the themes of transferring knowledge in the field of theater art, meeting of generations, the importance of duration and continuity in the culture of a country, as well as how knowledge in this art, which exists only at the moment it is performed,
can be recorded, passed on to another, and preserved for the future.

PASSING ON THE FLAME

Invited guest artists represent the most important artists from the generation of great theater masters of our time: Eugenio Barba and Odin Teatret (Denmark), Peter Schumann, and Bread & Puppet Theatre (USA), Jill Greenghalgh (Wales),
Rena Mirecka (Poland), Gennady Bogdanov (Russia). These are artists and troupes who have marked the 20th century with their artistic work and whose activities still continue in the 21st century. We have had the opportunity to see some of them at BITEF, which
represents a significant link between this festival, which has been running for several decades, and the activities of DAH Teatar.

The second generation of invited artists is the generation to which DAH Teatar also belongs in terms of work and activity. These are troupes and artists who continue the work of the theater “masters” with their activities and represent a bridge between them and the generations that
are coming. They also represent a significant phenomenon on today’s world theater scene and open up new possibilities in this artistic field with their innovative work: Theaterlabor (Germany), Teatret OM (Denmark), Secos y Mojados
(Violeta Luna/Roberto Varea, Mexico/Argentina), Plavo pozorište (Serbia), Ister Teatar (Serbia), Voix Polyphoniques (France), Tricklock Theatre (USA), 7 Stages Theatre (USA).

The third generation is represented by artists and troupes who, in a direct or indirect way, represent the generation that continues our work, and which is already present on the world theater scene, a generation open to experimentation and theatrical
excess: ArtSpot Productions (USA), DNA Works (USA), Prodigal Theatre (UK), Fragment Teatar (Switzerland), Ansambl Miraž (Serbia).

In addition to the presentation of performances by the listed artists and troupes, another important segment of this festival is the accompanying program of the festival:

Conversations – a conversation between artists who belong to the generation of theater “masters” and our leading artists and theorists.

Reflections – round tables and meetings between our and foreign artists with a focus on the transfer of knowledge in the theater.

Presentations – presentation of theater projects that deal with theater and social phenomena: theater and activism, theater and peacebuilding, theater and spiritual disciplines, theater and social change, etc. In the form of presentations, films,
book promotions, the effectiveness of theater in other areas will be discussed.

The third segment of this meeting are the workshops that will be led by two famous artists, Genadi Bogdanov, who is a direct successor to the tradition of Meyerhold, and Rena Mirecka, who is a direct successor to the tradition of Grotowski.
