FATE – Future Academy on Tour in Europe – aims to create a connection between newcomers – refugees and migrants, and EU citizens through artistic training, inclusion, and increased employment in the cultural sector. The goal is to generate
interest in the employability of talented/professional creative migrants and to ensure they have equal opportunities in the labor market in the cultural sector, compared to local artists and creative professionals. [2020-2022]
With the support of the European Union’s Creative Europe program, five international partners are joining forces and expertise in the FATE project: ZID Theater – Citi Art & Performance Center (Netherlands), Atalaia/TNT (Spain), Social Community
Theatre Centre/University of Torino (Italy), DAH Theater (Serbia), and Studio 7 (Germany).
OBJECTIVES
Developing, testing, and documenting training methods for “new players” – i.e., professional performers and producers with migrant and refugee backgrounds who want to pursue a professional career in the arts in Europe. Creative professionals
with migrant and refugee backgrounds have limited opportunities to find work in their professional field in new countries. Partners believe that it is the “fate” of these people to stay in Europe and that they should be enabled to participate fully
and sustainably in the cultural life of their city, region, country, and continent.
With FATE, we want to ensure that creative young people with refugee or migrant backgrounds can participate equally in the professional arts and culture sector, both on stage, behind the stage, and within organizations. Various
studies have shown that the participation of these young people in the professional arts and culture sector in Europe is still very limited. With this project, we support our mission to make art and culture accessible to everyone, both locally
and internationally.
RESULTS
After two years in a joint process, the partners have achieved various creative results: performances with migrant artists
„Suenos en travesia” TNT/Atalaia [Spain] and
„No fear” by ZID Theater from Amsterdam [project leader]. Also, two smaller productions related to the theme of the project: the play “
Zemlja[Terra]” by Dah Teatar from Serbia and “
CianCa” by Studio7 from Germany.
In the final phase of the project, conferences will be held in each partner country to present the results of the work to the wider public and organizations dealing with art and migrant issues. The methodology used in the project
will be published in the FATE Handbook. The digital platform
FATE will enable professionals, participants, partners, and policymakers across Europe to access the knowledge and methods developed in this project.
