CROSSING THE LINE

A DAH Theatre performance based on texts from the book “The Women’s Side of War,” published by the activist group Women in Black (2007). The book is a collection of authentic testimonies of women about the wars that were fought on the territory of the former Yugoslavia from 1991-1999. It was created as a result of a year-long research project by Women in Black, with regional cooperation from women’s non-governmental organizations dealing with human rights and facing the past. [2009]

The texts in the book have (mostly) already been published in various collections and other publications of these non-governmental organizations and consist of testimonies, statements, letters, memories, and depict the specificity of women’s suffering in war, but also their courage and strength to overcome war traumas and establish a normal life; as well as the importance of solidarity with women beyond all borders and divisions.

All testimonies are in the first person, without commentary or other types of use or misuse.

An important goal of the performance is to establish a process of facing the past. One of the goals of the performance is to reach those present, not only on a verbal level, but above all on an emotional and psychological level. To encourage women to speak out, to record, and, through recognizing their own suffering, to recognize the suffering of the “other”; to develop solidarity and come to an awareness of the essence of war violence; to become more actively involved in democratic processes and participate more actively in building a just and lasting peace.
